Central Texas I-35 Town

Listings in Troy, TX

Welcome to Troy, a small Bell County city on Interstate 35 between Waco and Temple, where a rural, family-centered setting meets direct access to Central Texas.

Troy is a small city in northeastern Bell County, Texas, set along Interstate 35 about midway between Waco and Temple and within the Killeen–Temple–Fort Hood metropolitan area. Its position on one of Texas's principal north-south freeways gives a town of roughly 2,400 people a reach that far exceeds its size, putting the jobs, shopping, and services of Temple, Waco, and the surrounding region within a short drive. The community took shape around a railway station after 1882, when the settlement of New Troy grew up alongside the tracks and eventually supplanted an earlier village of the same name two miles north on Elm Creek. That rail-and-farm origin is still legible in Troy's layout: a compact center near the tracks surrounded by open farmland and dispersed acreage. Through most of its history, Troy has been a small agricultural and bedroom community, its fortunes tied to the surrounding Bell County countryside and the corridor that runs past it. Today Troy reads as a quiet, family-centered place with a rural feel. Residents own most of the homes, and the pace of life is slower than in the nearby cities. The town's public schools, anchored by the Troy Independent School District, serve as a community hub, drawing families from Troy and the smaller surrounding settlements of Pendleton and Belfalls. For households, Troy's appeal is the combination of a country setting with exceptional highway convenience. Interstate 35 runs along the town's edge, making it a practical base for commuters to Temple, Waco, and points beyond, while the town itself retains the scale and character of a Central Texas small town rather than a suburban extension.

City Guide

About Troy

Real Estate & Housing

Housing in Troy centers on modest single-family homes, many of them owner-occupied and set on lots that reflect the town's rural surroundings. The stock includes older houses near the historic center as well as newer homes on the town's edges, with acreage and rural properties available on the surrounding Bell County farmland. The community's rural feel is a defining trait, and residents typically own rather than rent. For those seeking more space than the urban centers of Temple or Waco offer, Troy provides a smaller-scale, lower-density alternative. Growth has been measured, and the town retains much of its original small-town street pattern.

Neighborhoods

Lifestyle in Troy

Life in Troy is small-town and unhurried. The community's identity revolves around its schools, churches, and the rural Bell County landscape that surrounds it, with local events and school activities anchoring the social calendar. Residents typically look to nearby Temple or Waco for major retail, dining, and medical services, keeping daily errands close to home. The town's history as a farming and railroad settlement gives it a grounded, working-community character. For many, the draw is a quiet, family-oriented setting that sits just off the interstate rather than far from it.

Schools & Education

Public education in Troy is provided by the Troy Independent School District, a small district established in 1896 that serves the town of Troy along with the surrounding communities of Pendleton, Belfalls, Little Mexico, and Oenaville. The district's compact size means close ties between the schools and the community, with local campuses serving as a focal point of town life. Students progress through elementary, middle, and high school within the district. For families seeking additional options, the larger school systems of Temple, Belton, and Waco are reachable along the I-35 corridor.

Getting Around

Troy sits directly on Interstate 35, the major north-south freeway of Central Texas, which runs along the town's edge and connects it to Waco to the north and Temple and Belton to the south. This frontage is Troy's defining transportation asset, giving residents a fast, direct route to the region's employment and commercial centers. The town is part of the Killeen–Temple–Fort Hood metropolitan area, and the larger Central Texas cities lie within a short drive. Regional air service is available through the Waco and Killeen–Temple airports.

Parks & Recreation

Recreation in Troy draws on the open countryside of northeastern Bell County and the town's own community facilities. School athletics and community events provide much of the local activity. For larger outings, residents are within a short drive of Temple and Waco, whose parks, lakes, and attractions — including the museums and cultural institutions of Waco — offer considerably more. The town's interstate location also makes day trips to larger Central Texas and Hill Country destinations practical.
